Research Project

‘WhatsUp?’

A 5 week programme granted by Runnymede to work with young people to create a service to support BME communities on the areas of Child Protection and Generational Abuse.

ISSUE: BME Children and Young People are less likely to be in touch with universal support services, they are under-represented within them. There are many barriers for BME communities to engage with support services including: Trust, Shame, Working with the Police and lack of Awareness. Additionally there are very little culturally appropriate support services for BME (Black) communities in Birmingham.

SOLUTION: 'WhatsUp?' Research Survey and Project

WHO: Young People age 14-21 living in Birmingham.

AIM: Recoil Youth will lead this project with young people that volunteer to participate.

Part 1: Survey Questionnaire to collate young people's thoughts and feelings on support services.

Part 2: Meet with young people to facilitate workshops to explore "What is needed for BME communities to access universal support services and engage with preventative programmes?".

Young people will have the opportunity to work in partnership with Recoil Youth; to create a service idea with the intentions to write an application/business plan for future funding, to develop and implement the idea.
